Kids swimming lessons in Dubai

Games keep them moving, and the skills underneath the games are the ones that keep them safe.

Kids Lessons in Dubai: the short answer

Rehan Ahmad teaches private swimming lessons for children aged 4 to 8 across Dubai, one child at a time, at the family's own villa, building or community pool. Each lesson is a full hour and costs from AED 125 in the eight-lesson pack. Children learn independent floating and treading, freestyle and backstroke basics, and the self-rescue skills that make them safe near water.

What the swimmer learns

  • Independent floating and treading
  • Freestyle and backstroke basics
  • Diving and underwater skills
  • Water safety and self-rescue

Safety skills come first, strokes come second

A child who can swim ten metres of neat freestyle but cannot turn around and get back to the wall is not yet water-safe. Rehan teaches the self-rescue sequence early: roll onto your back, float, breathe, turn, swim to the edge, hold on, climb out.

The World Health Organization lists teaching school-age children basic swimming and water-safety skills among the measures that reduce drowning, and drowning remains one of the leading causes of death for children in this age band worldwide.

Why it works better one-on-one at this age

Four to eight is the age where group lessons lose the most time. In a class of six, a child spends most of the hour queueing at the wall. In a private lesson, the same hour is all theirs.

It also means the lesson can change direction mid-session. If a child cracks breathing on the third attempt, Rehan spends the next twenty minutes on it rather than moving on because the plan said so.

What a 4 to 8 year old learns

The progression is roughly this, though every child moves through it at their own pace.

  • Independent front and back floating, with no support
  • Treading water and staying calm out of their depth
  • Freestyle with rotary breathing to the side
  • Backstroke with a straight body line
  • Diving for objects and being comfortable underwater
  • Jumping in, surfacing, turning and swimming back to the wall

Nervous children

A child who is frightened of the water is not a problem to be solved quickly. Rehan starts wherever the child actually is, which sometimes means the first lesson never goes past waist depth.

Because the lesson is private and usually in the child's own pool, there is no audience and no comparison with a faster classmate. That removes most of what makes a nervous child dig in.

Keeping progress between lessons

Children at this age lose skills quickly if they only swim once a fortnight. One lesson a week, plus any normal family pool time, holds progress well.

Rehan tells you after each lesson what to practise, and it is always something simple enough to do in ten minutes without turning family swim time into a training session.

Questions parents ask about kids lessons

At what age can a child swim independently?

It varies widely by child and by how consistently they swim. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that by age four most children are ready for swim lessons and that by five or six most can master the front crawl. Water safety skills such as floating and returning to the wall usually come before clean stroke technique.

How many lessons does my child need?

There is no fixed number, because it depends on the starting point and on how often the child swims between lessons. A child who is already comfortable in water and swims weekly usually shows clear progress within a block of eight lessons. A child starting from real fear takes longer, and the early lessons are spent on comfort rather than strokes.

Is private better than group for a nervous child?

Usually yes. A nervous child in a group tends to compare themselves to faster classmates and to wait at the wall between turns, which gives anxiety time to build. A private lesson moves at their pace with no audience, which is why Rehan teaches every lesson one-on-one by default.

Can siblings learn together?

Lessons are private by default, but Rehan does teach siblings, either back to back in the same visit or together where it suits both children. Message him on WhatsApp with the ages and levels and he will tell you honestly which arrangement will work better and what it costs.
