Swimming lessons for youth and teens in Dubai

Two very different swimmers, both taught one-on-one: the teenager who never learned, and the one who wants to go faster.

Youth & Teens in Dubai: the short answer

Rehan Ahmad teaches private swimming lessons for 9 to 17 year olds across Dubai, covering both late starters and competitive swimmers. Lessons are a full hour, one-on-one, at the swimmer's own pool, from AED 125 each in the eight-lesson pack. Late starters learn to swim without the embarrassment of a beginners' class, and club swimmers work on stroke technique, flip turns, racing starts and endurance.

What the swimmer learns

  • All four competitive strokes
  • Flip turns and racing starts
  • Endurance and speed training
  • Stroke correction and refinement

The late starter

A thirteen-year-old who cannot swim will not join a class of six-year-olds, and they are right not to want to. A private lesson at their own pool removes the only real obstacle, which is being seen.

Teenagers usually learn quickly once that is out of the way. They can follow a technical instruction, they have the strength for a proper body position, and they can practise on their own between lessons.

The competitive swimmer

Rehan swam year-round with Occoquan Swimming and then in the Senior Gold group at the Potomac Marlins, with a best of 23.67 for the 50-yard freestyle and 51.17 for the 100. His times are public on SwimCloud, so you can check them rather than take his word for it.

For a club swimmer, a private hour is where the things a squad session never has time for get fixed: catch and hold in the freestyle pull, breakout off the wall, a flip turn that does not lose half a second, a start that does not belly-flop.

What gets worked on

Depending on which of the two swimmers you are, an hour covers some of this.

  • All four competitive strokes, built or corrected from the body position up
  • Rotary breathing that does not stall the stroke
  • Flip turns, open turns and a clean underwater breakout
  • Racing starts off the block or the side
  • Pacing, endurance sets and reading a pace clock
  • Deep-water confidence and treading for long periods

School swimming and squad trials

Plenty of teenagers in Dubai need to reach a specific standard for school swimming or a club trial by a specific date. If you tell Rehan the standard and the deadline on the intro call, he will say plainly whether it is realistic in the time available and what it would take.

He would rather tell you a target is tight than sell you a pack that was never going to get there.

Questions parents ask about youth & teens

Is my teenager too old to learn to swim?

No. Teenagers often learn faster than younger children because they can follow a technical instruction, hold a body position and practise deliberately on their own. The usual obstacle is embarrassment rather than ability, which is why Rehan teaches privately at the swimmer's own pool with no class watching.

Can Rehan coach a competitive swimmer?

Yes. Rehan trained year-round with Occoquan Swimming and competed in the Senior Gold group at the Potomac Marlins, with personal bests of 23.67 in the 50-yard freestyle, 51.17 in the 100 and 1:03.36 in the 100 breaststroke. His results are publicly listed on SwimCloud, and private hours are used for the technical work squad sessions cannot fit in.

Can lessons fit around school and squad training?

Yes. Rehan schedules lessons around school hours and existing squad sessions, including evenings and weekends. Because he travels to your pool, there is no extra commute to fit in either, which is usually the thing that makes the week impossible.
